Hey Chris, what have you been doing recently?
Things have been good - I've done some great gigs and been working really hard in the studio so its all coming together in these tough times so It's all positive.
So tell us about your release on Trapez - its a great label with history
Trapez is one of those labels that's been around forever and has a history of quality music. I had this track ("Dance Of Death") that was different to the other stuff I make, it was less full on, more melodic and, dare I say, musical but still with a dark twist and it fit the bill perfectly for the label. Riley (Traum/Trapez label owner) loved it and then I just got some of my friends (Valmay aka Paul Mac, DJ3000 and Justin Berkovi) who I thought could do interesting remixes it and I couldn't be happier with the results!
Are you planning a follow up?
Yes I've got some tracks i'm working on which sort of take this sound further which is really interesting. I'm hoping to have something ready in the next couple of weeks. I've got a wicked remixer lined up for it as well so watch this space ;)
What productions do you have coming soon?
Aside from the Trapez record, i've just had a couple of tracks signed by Luke Slater for Mote which i'm really excited about, something coming on M_Rec Ltd, an EP out on Flux Digital and just working on 2 other EPs which are 95% done. I've also just remixed Orlando Voorn which was an honour, i've got a remix of a new artist (Ed Mackie) out on Jamie Anderson's Artform Records very soon and also just remixed DJ3000 so lots going on!
Your Electric Deluxe Podcast a few months ago was a real breath of fresh air, really different
I had so much fun doing that mix, although it was a real headache as well. I had been wanting to do a mix like that for a long time and I could have made it so much longer but 2 hours was the maximum and I kind of rocked it if I am allowed to say that :) I wanted to do something different to what everyone else on there as doing and i'm happy with the way it turned out. I'm going to put “part 2” together early next year as well.
You presented the Split Radio Show with Ben Sims for a long time. Any chance of it returning? It was so good!
I always get asked this, but Im afraid not, no. We did the show for 4 years together and put a lot of hard work and time into it but it wont be returning. If you listen back to the shows now, especially the ones from the 5th or 6th onwards, they really were well put together and I can say that there wasn't anything like it around for techno at the time, or maybe even now as we presented it as a proper radio show and not a podcast. We had the biggest names in techno every month doing mixes for us, and got to help break loads of new artists who have gone on to be major players.
So where do you stand on the whole “Digital DJing” thing?
Well i've used Serato with turntables for the last 4 years and i've loved it but recently have been finding that a lot of clubs I play at don't maintain their decks and this has been causing so many issues which is a shame. Then a month ago I had a play around with the NI S4 and I totally fell in love with it. Its the most fun i've had DJing for a long long time and its opened up so many possibilities. If people say using Traktor is “cheating” or whatever, I totally disagree – i've got nothing to prove as a DJ at all, i've paid my dues and now its time to take things to the next level and make my sets sound as good and creative as I possibly can. If you know what you are doing with the gear it adds a real live performance element to DJing and i'm really excited about the future of my Djing.
We've heard a rumour about a special Atomic Jam party (your DJ residency) coming up…
Oh yes…the legendary Que Club in the UK is closing (being turned into apartments) and as its been Atomic Jam's home since it started (1995!), and we have the honour of doing the last ever gig in there. For those who haven't been to the Que Club, it's such a special place. We joke that Berghain is Europe's answer to the Que Club> It's such a shame it is closing, but we are going to give it a huge send off, so it should be an amazing party.
Tell us about you new affiliation with Ministry Of Sound
Yeah, i'm now doing some tutoring for them at their DJ academy which is great fun. I went to Switzerland with them for their Swiss academy a couple of weeks ago and I have just filmed something with the Native Instruments Kontrol S4 for The Gadget Show here in the UK which is going to be fun, so its a really nice little extra to be able to be getting involved with.
